Overview
The Greek Community at the University of Oklahoma is dedicated to community service and philanthropy. Delta Upsilon has long been a leader in these charitable pursuits on campus and in the Norman community. Below are a few of the philanthropies that the chapter house has been involved in during the past year.
Run to Dallas
Each fall, the DU chapter and a top sorority host "Run to Dallas" before the annual OU/TX football game. This event is a raffle that raises funds for various organizations. On October 6, 2007, Delta Upsilon paired with Delta Delta Delta to raise almost $4,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and a scholarship in the name of fallen brother Austin McKaig. This year our speaker was past football coach, Merve Johnson. Past speakers at the event have included Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens, Sooners basketball coach, Kelvin Sampson and Director of OU's Women's Basketball, Bill Pink.
DU's Pledge Class Philanthropy!
Fall of 2007 was DU's first ever Carnipalooza, a mini carnival that was hosted by the 2007 Pledge Class. Every Year the DU pledge class is responsible to host their own philanthropy so they can learn the importance of leading, growing and serving in the Norman community. Carnipalooza raised over 1,200 dollars for Make a Wish Foundation.
Relay for Life
Relay for Life is a national activity that supports The American Cancer Society. It offers everyone in a community the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. The University of Oklahoma had their annual Relay for Life event held at the North Oval where teams from different organization on campus campout and had at least one member walking around the oval. Delta Upsilon had a handful of brothers that raised over 1,500 dollars for the Norman Community in 2008.
Big Event
Big Event is the biggest philanthropy OU has on their campus; over 4,000 students get together to make a difference in the community. Delta Upsilon had over 100 brothers that participated in cleaning up Cleveland County.
Salvation Army Annual Christmas Bell Ring
Every year fraternities and sorority stand around campus in the blistering cold to support the Salvation Army's Annual Christmas Bell Ring. Salvation Army presents a golden bell trophy to either a fraternity or sorority that raised the most money that year. Delta Upsilon raised over 1,600 dollars in 2008 making them the first ever organization to win it four consecutive years in a row.
Coast Guard
Each spring, the men of Delta Upsilon host OU's fraternities and sororities for a friendly sand volleyball tournament. The event coincides with our annual spring beach party. Proceeds for the Coast Guard philanthropy benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma County. The Boys and Girls Club is Delta Upsilon's national philanthropy.
